International Socialism, Spring 1961

Theo Melville

144 Exciteable Persons
(Algeria)

From International Socialism (1st series), No.4, Spring 1961, p.17. [1]
Transcribed & marked up by Einde O’Callaghan for ETOL.

114 dead,
114 exciteable persons
reported
by the press,
spoken of
in connection
with liberty.

A mere 114 dead
in the morgue
of our time,
an infinitesimal number
of 114 dead.

Desert sands
and darkness over the Caspah
and tortured men
and 114 dead.

114 dead
and listening to music
and love affairs
and cold winds
and laughter
and writing
and getting up
and contemplating
and 114 dead.

114 exciteable persons,
departed
suddenly,
unexpectedly,
leaving no forwarding address.

114 unremarkable persons,
save that they died
between the 10 Dec & 13 Dec (inclusive),
in the year, 1960.

114 exciteable persons.

Note

1. Theo Melville is on the staff of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He tells us that, although stimulated by politics, he is mainly preoccupied with writing poetry. He is a great admirer of André Breton and surrealism in general.
