International Socialism, Spring 1963

Notes of the Quarter

The Ism Not the Man

From International Socialism, No.12, Spring 1963, p.5.
Transcribed & marked up by Einde O’Callaghan for ETOL.

Gaitskell was not the first Labour Party leader who tried, and to some extent succeeded, in decanting class from Party politics; nor was his period of leadership significant in having hastened or altered the trend in any way. If, in years to come, it will be thought to have been remarkable, it might well be because under him and instigated by him, the Party drew near to proclaiming its ‘classlessness’ formally and publicly, near to renouncing Clause 4 of its constitution.

His successor might be more devious in his methods. But of one thing we are sure: there will be no remission in his drive to drain the Party of its class content as there will be no remission in our campaign to keep the two wedded together.
