Karl Marx
Arnold Kettle
Wiedenfeld & Nicolson; 10s. 6d.

This is another of the ‘Marxism for infants’ genus and it is a fair example of its kind. Marxists will find very little to stimulate them in a work which deals with Marx’s economics, philosophy, historical philosophy and biography in 100 pages. Nevertheless for Young Socialists it provides a well-written if uncritical introduction to the major concepts of marxism. Not surprisingly the last chapter on the present status of Marx’s ideas reads a little like the British Road to Socialism. But a major criticism of this book is the absence of references to the texts in which Marx states Professor Kettle’s ideas. Not only does this defeat the purpose of an introductory work, it could even be construed as dishonesty.
