Political Leadership of People's Socialist Republic of Albania (1946 - 1992)

Enver Hoxha

Enver Hoxha (1908-1985)
An early leader of the communist movement in Albania, Enver Hoxha distinguished himself as a hero of the anti-fascist resistance during the Second World War. Under his leadership he moved this War of National Liberation into the second stage, a socialist revolution. Hoxha was a vigorous defender of the work and legacy of Joseph Stalin following Khrushchev's denunciation of the Soviet leader at the Twentieth Congress of the CPSU in 1956. Initially this was in alliance with Mao and China, but after XX Hoxha criticised China. Thereafter there were two strands in the international anti-revisionist movement, one pro-Albania and Hoxha, and one pro-China and Mao. He was a prolific writer, authoring an extensive collection of theoretical and political works. Hoxha led Albania for 41 years until his passing in 1985.

A member of Albania's Communist Youth organization, later joining the Party of Labor of Albania. A longstanding political leader of People's Socialist Republic of Albania, Alia succeeded Enver Hoxha as President upon Hoxha's passing in 1985, but he quickly deviated from the established path of socialism in Albania. Effectively he played a similar role to that played by Khruschev in the USSR after Stalin's death. He resigned in 1992 and was later jailed and prosecuted by his anti-communist opponents.
