(1937-1938)
Introduction
The Volunteer for Liberty (1937-1938), published first in Madrid and later Barcelona, Spain, was the official organ of the English-speaking battalions of the International Brigades that fought for the Republic durng the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).
These battalions were part of the XVth International Brigade, whose units included the Lincoln, British, Mackenzie-Papineau and 24th Battalions.
The Volunteer for Liberty's first editor was the British novelist Ralph Bates, but it was subsequently edited by two Americans, first the poet Edwin Rolfe, and later, John Tisa.
The last issue, in November 1938, was published to commemorate the withdrawal of the International Brigades from Spain.
