Mengistu Haile Mariam
(1937–)
Mengistu Haile Mariam (Amharic: መንግሥቱ ኃይለ ማርያም; born May 21, 1937) is an Ethiopian former politician who was head of state of socialist Ethiopia from 1977 to 1991. Following the collapse of the People's Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in 1991, Mengistu sought asylum in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he still lives.
